My parents have a large patch of ivy near the front door. It is heaven for snails.
During a family get-together there, it started raining, and the snails came out in full force. The kids entertained themselves by collecting the snails and keeping them in a small corner of the front porch. Then, they started putting them on the wall and letting them climb up. This is a vastly entertaining project, we discoverd, because all the kids loved it, regardless of gender or age. They probably worked on this project for over an hour. By the time we left the house, the kids had counted 73 snails in the snail farm corner of the porch!! Gross!!
Joy Bosse, host of the local radio gardening program, Joy in the Garden, says the kind of snails we have in this area are the same kind you can eat. You just have to feed them oats for 2 days before you cook them. Escargo, anyone?
