Taking the Challenge

After missing the big karate tournament for the last couple years, we decided to go for it and sign everyone up this year.

It was a very crowded arena (it always is at this school!) but I managed to find a spot big enough for one person to sit and watch the events.  It was at the far end of the gym, so I was really hoping the kids would be competing in rings closest to me!

I lucked out with Brooklyn.  She was in the ring right in front of me performing her short one kata.  She just barely learned this kata, and she is not great at it yet.  When they learn this kata, they first learn just one side (just half of the kata) and later they do the second side.  This is where they repeat the entire thing, but doing everything opposite, stepping right instead of left and so forth.  She has only learned the first side, but she got confused when the kid that performed first did both sides.  Brooklyn tried to do both sides, but it didn’t go really well.  Her first side looked pretty good, though, considering how little practice she has actually had with it.  She came home with a participation medal which she refused to take off for the rest of the day!

The Competition

This second picture is one I snapped of the entire group (or as much as I could fit in the shot) before the competition began.  They start with their student creed and the Pledge of Allegiance.

Techniques Competition

This last picture is of Quinn competing in the techniques category.  This is where they demonstrate 3 techniques on a partner.  Ryan was the lucky partner that got to be beat up and fall on the hard floor.  They all did pretty well, no major awards, but it was still a good time.
